A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLASTING
Mechanical tools were the first instruments of blasting. Slow, methodical, and tedious.
The introduction of gunpowder in mining in 1627 in Hungary produced the first leap in the blasting world. While a significant improvement, the process was still slow, tedious, and tiring. During a ten-hour shift, a team could typically drill, load, and fire black powder charges in just eight to ten holes. Nevertheless, the innovation spread quickly throughout Europe and the Americas.
Dynamite, an explosive five times more powerful than black powder, presented the second leap in the blasting cycle. Invented in 1866 by Swedish chemist Alfred Bernhard Nobel (yes, the Nobel Prizes awarded today bear his name), within 10 years, dynamite had largely replaced black powder in most blasting applications. What could take days and weeks to complete could now be blasted in minutes and hours. The Industrial Revolution could flourish.
Today, the art of blasting has evolved into a science of careful planning, abundant preparation, applied technology, and diligent execution. While the methods and tools may have changed, the goal is still the same–to clear an area safely, with respect for the environment for responsible land use projects.
